Žabljak is a village located at the foot of the Durmitor mountain, with the highest altitude in the Balkans, at about 1,450 meters in the very center of the city. It is surrounded by 23 mountain peaks over 2,300 meters above sea level. The underground watercourse between the Žabljak River and the source of Bijeli Vrela, in the Tara canyon, is a natural rarity. This watercourse flows under the bed of Tara, and springs from its other side. The first Slavic name of this place was Varezina voda. This is because of the source of drinking water around which it was settled and formed. Later, it was given the new name Hanovi and merchant caravans rested there. The name Žabljak comes from the frogs that live in the Otoke area and herald spring every year. It was officially named in 1870, when it became part of the Principality of Montenegro. It was then that the construction of the church of St. Transformations. In 1935, the municipal board decided to call the place Aleksandrov-grad, after the deceased king.
