Virpazar is a town settlement in the municipality of Bar in Montenegro. According to the 2003 census, there were 337 inhabitants (according to the 1991 census, there were 409 inhabitants). Virpazar is a fairytale place at the crossroads where many different roads intertwine. In that area, what guests need most is waiting for them: a fountain with spring water, the shade of old and tall plane trees, organic food and loving hosts. The settlement was created at the confluence of the rivers Orahovštica and Crmnica. Merging, one source of the city creates the river Virštica, which flows into Lake Skadar. Virpazar also has three stone bridges, sung in old folk songs. The well-known picnic spot is the main transit station for cruises on the largest lake in the Balkans and a place of cultural and historical monuments, monasteries and fortifications concentrated on picturesque islands called Gorica. Sandy beaches, authentic rural architecture and vineyards are an integral part of the landscape that offers visitors a rich table of fresh lake fish and high-quality Crmnik wines. Virpazar was mentioned for the first time in 1242 in the charter of King Vladislav, when it was an important trading center. In the second half of the 19th century, it was connected to Bar by road, and from 1908 by a narrow-gauge railway. This place is also one of the first post offices in Montenegro. On the elevation above Virpazor, there are the remains of the ancient Besac, built by the Turks, and nearby is the village of Mijele, where a prehistoric necropolis with tombs lined with large stone slabs was found. It is from this point that the marvelous ambiance of Montenegrin Sveta Gora begins, and from Virpazar you can also start a tour of the last pelican habitat and the largest bird reserve in Europe. If, on the other hand, you happen to be here in December, visit the Festival of Wine and Ukleve, an event where everyone enjoys a unique atmosphere with autochthonous varieties of wine and colorful fish specialties only in the southern season. Tophana monastery is located here.
