Mostar is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the cultural and economic center of Herzegovina, the administrative seat of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. It got its name from the bridge guards (mostari), on the banks of the Neretva River. The city is known for the famous Old Bridge, built in the 16th century. The Old Bridge is the first cultural monument in Bosnia and Herzegovina that is on the UNESCO list of protected cultural monuments of the world. The city is the largest urban center in Herzegovina and the fifth largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. According to the 1991 census, it had 75,865 inhabitants. Today, the number of inhabitants in the city itself is slightly smaller and amounts to 64,301. In the entire municipality, according to the estimates of the Bureau of Statistics of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2003, a total of 105,448 people live. Of these, 50,019 Bosniaks, 50,929 Croats, 3,644 Serbs, and 856 others. The surroundings of Mostar are very populated, with rich villages such as Potoci (2921 inhabitants in 1991), Vrapčići (3461 inhabitants in 1991), and Rodoč (4499 inhabitants in 1991).
