Herceg Novi is a town in the municipality of Herceg Novi in Montenegro. According to the 2003 census, there were 12,739 inhabitants (according to the 1991 census, there were 11,429 inhabitants). Herceg Novi is a coastal town located at the entrance to Boka Kotor and at the foot of the Orjen mountain. Herceg Novi is the center of the municipality of the same name, which stretches from the Debeli Brijeg border crossing to the narrowest part of Boka Kotorska (the strait of Veriga – 300 m wide), on a total area of 235 km² and has about 39,000 inhabitants. The geographic coordinates of the city are: 42″27′ north latitude and 18″33′ east latitude. The city is surrounded by the mountain Orjen (1,895 m is known for its endemic species, recreational trails and skiing in the late spring and sometimes early summer months), hills: Dobroštica (1,570 m) and Radoštak (1,441 m) and the Luštica peninsula with the highest with the top of Obosnik (586 m). The very entrance to the Bay of Kotor is located between Capes Oštra and Mirište and is approx. 2,900 meters. The average water depth in the Gulf is 27.8 meters, and the maximum is 61 meters. Since 1997, Boka Kotorska has been officially included in the Association of the 28 most beautiful bays in the world.
